Third Wave Pentecostalism

Synod 2007 took up the first Third Wave Pentecostalism reports but withheld action because they failed to provide "sufficient biblical study and theological reflection on key aspects of the third wave movement." The task was recommitted to a "beefed up" study committee which will be presenting this new report to Synod 2009.

What are your thoughts and comments on the report specifically or on the whole topic in general?

Pentecostalism is one part Arminianism, one part Zwickau Prophets, and one part anabaptist. How Reformed people could go for this stuff beyond what one might find in the writings of the Scottish Covenanters is perplexing.

There is an ocean of bad theology in Pentecostalism that has to be swallowed before the baby can be rescued.

The Holy Spirit is embarrassed by this stuff. So should we.

Read Warfield's "Miracles" or just watch some clips of the Kansas City Prophets or of "church services" at Toronto Airport Church.

But of course, somebody can always come along and post here saying that the Holy Spirit told them I was wrong.

One thing that strikes me is that not a single Calvin Seminary professor was involved with this second report (probably because the two who were on the previous committee, Drs. Avila and Tucker - were treated poorly, as I understood at the time). I would have appreciated more theological critique.

Besides the fact that we have multitudes of Christian brothers and sisters who are Pentecostal, we also have many who are blending Reformed soteriology with the charismatic movement - like CJ Mahaney and Sovereign Grace Ministries (see below)

I would like to recommend a book review from the November issue of (RCA) Perspectives Journal - entitled "Signs and Wonders for the Reformed" by J. Todd Billings, professor of Reformed Theology at Western Seminary. It's a review of a book by John Algera published by the CRC's Faith Alive publications. I think he has some wise cautions.
